Home remodels should be a fun and exciting experience. Taking the necessary steps to prepare for the remodel can go a long way in your project being a success.
Know your budget. It can be easy to get carried away when planning your home remodel. Finding out late in the process that you’re plans are out of reach of your budget can be a big disappointment. Add a buffer to accommodate ideas or changes that may come up during the project.
Timing. Look ahead at your calendar and pick a time for the remodel that will be least disruptive to you and your household.
Prioritize. Make a list of everything you want and prioritize into two categories:
Nice to have.
Create a vision board. Find pictures of your dream kitchen, bathroom, etc. and put them on a board. Social media sites like Pinterest and Instagram can provide inspiration.
Pick a reputable contractor. Check with the BBB, ask for referrals, check online reviews. Meet with them in person before deciding. Make sure you are comfortable with them and they are going to be your advocate throughout the project.
Prepare your home and household. Find out from your contractor if there will be any time during the remodel that you will not be able to stay in your home. This is rare, but better to know up front and plan for it.
Make arrangements for pets if they will not be able to stay in your home during the remodel.
Declutter. Remodeling is a great time to get rid of things you don’t need and free up room in your home. Put larger items in storage so you don’t have to fill up other rooms.
Remove anything important from the room or rooms being remodeled that you will need. Use bins to store items and tape a label to the top with a list of contents to easily find things.
Create an oasis in your home. Even well planned home remodels can be disruptive to your normal life. Make sure you have at least one room in your home where you can retreat.
When all is said and done, with good planning, you will have the home remodel of your dreams and a great investment in your home.
